Full disclosure: I’ve been Wiccan for almost 40 years, and we’ll figure into parts of my review.
First of all, I LOVE THIS COVER!!! It reminds me of something out of one of my old books of shadows, and thus immediately lends authenticity to the story within.
White Tree Coven: Tale of the Inn hits me two ways… Both as a spooky ghost story and as a novel with Wiccan characters and real-world occultism woven into the plot.
First, as a ghost story. As a ghost story, it’s quite successful. The plot is well conceived, with just enough twists and turns to keep things from getting predictable without getting difficult to follow. The Characters feel very real and relatable, making you like them immediately… An absolute must for building tension! Stakes are high, and the chills keep coming until the gripping conclusion!
Now, as a novel with Wiccan characters and real-world occultism. I’ll admit, I fell in love with this book before the story really got going. I’ve known Witches just like these Wiccan characters in real life, and reading this book felt like hanging out with old friends. I found myself nodding along with Herbal Remedies and color correspondences, and deciphering symbols before the characters could even get a chance.
I Especially loved the Seax Wicca elements. I got to meet Raymond Buckland in person multiple times (as he lived quite close to me and his final years), and knew of his desire to see Seax Wicca continue and thrive. I know he’s smiling from the Summerlands.
If you love a good ghost story, check this book out. and if you’re a wiccan/pagan, do yourself a favor and buy yourself a copy!
