The cathedral of Manila was founded in 1571 and rebuilt after every earthquake that brought it down. This history follows the archdiocese from that foundation through the long Spanish centuries: the bishops, the religious orders that did the actual work of the colony, the disputes between friars and secular clergy that shaped Philippine society far more than any governor did.
