Description
Somebody stole the Headless Horseman’s head. It would like it back.
The Headless Horseman rides out at night with its head under its arm, stops, and calls a name. Whoever owns the name dies. In Ireland they call it the dullahan, and its round holds 45,000 names across 20 stops, from Tara to Troy to Babylon. Eleven nights ago somebody took the head, and nobody has been called since. Only the people on that round gain from a horseman that can’t speak.
The thief is somewhere on the round printed at the back of this book.
You have 21 clues to work through. Check each clue against the names on the round and eliminate anyone who doesn’t fit. Keep going until only one name remains.
45,000 names. 21 clues. One thief.
Inside the case file
- A printed list of 45,000 first names across 20 stops, each stop a place out of myth
- 21 clues covering the letters in a name, the names listed beside it and the stop it’s listed under
- Six monster-slayers hidden among the names, and one clue that depends on where you find them
- Full instructions and a worked example showing exactly how the puzzle works
- One unique solution, checked against every entry
- The thief’s name in the Closed Cases is printed in code, key included, so a glance at the back gives nothing away
- Difficulty: 1 out of 3
How the puzzle works
Each clue gives you another fact about the thief. If a name doesn’t match the clue, strike it from the round. As more clues are applied, the list gets smaller and the possibilities narrow.
This is a deduction puzzle built around one very large suspect list. There are no riddles and no grid to fill in. The work is 45,000 names, 21 clues and a process of elimination that ends at one name.
