Description
When Lord Stretherdale, an eccentric and miserly peer, dies suddenly on the French Riviera, the task of informing his heir and preparing the family castle for the funeral falls to young solicitor’s clerk Martin Mailey. The missing heir, now the new Lord Stretherdale, is nowhere to be found, and Mailey is sent to the remote Yorkshire estate of Stretherdale Castle to make arrangements.
But the ancient manor, long neglected and shrouded in cobwebs, is not as empty as it seems. Strange occurrences, a half-glimpsed figure, and the discovery that the old lord’s valet is hiding something raise disturbing questions. As Mailey digs into the family’s past, he uncovers rivalries over a missing fortune and a hidden past that someone will kill to protect.
With the help of a spirited local girl and a skeptical village policeman, Mailey must untangle a web of deceit before the murderer can bury the truth—along with the new heir.
