وتعقب هذه الزيارة ثلاثة أشباح تحمل سكروج إلى أعياد الميلاد الماضية والحاضرة والآتية. فهل بقي له وقت يغيّر فيه حياته؟

سمّى ديكنز حكايته النثرية ترنيمة، وجعل فصولها مقاطع لهذه الترنيمة. وقد احتُفظ بهذه التسمية في الترجمة.
