Description

The trolls call it a toll dispute. I file it as murder.

A dwarf has been killed at the troll bridges, the crossing every road runs through. 5,850 travellers paid to cross that day, including humans, elves, dwarves, goblins, trolls and more, and the trolls recorded every one of them in their ledger. The crowd blames Bolgrum, the troll working the bridge. The trolls say somebody passing through set him up.

The killer is somewhere in the ledger at the back of this book. Find them and Bolgrum can get back to charging people.

You have 28 clues to work through. Check each clue against the names in the ledger and eliminate anyone who doesn’t fit. Keep going until only one name remains.

5,850 names. 28 clues. One killer.

Inside the case file

  • A printed ledger of 5,850 fantasy names: humans, elves, dwarves, goblins, gnomes, halflings, pixies, centaurs and trolls
  • 28 clues covering names, ledger numbers, tolls, bridges, transport and what the trolls confiscated at inspection
  • Full instructions and a worked example showing exactly how the puzzle works
  • One unique solution, checked against every entry
  • The killer’s name in the Closed Cases is printed in troll (a cipher, key included), so a glance at the back gives nothing away
  • Difficulty: 2 out of 3

How the puzzle works

Each clue gives you another fact about the killer. If a name doesn’t match the clue, strike it from the ledger. As more clues are applied, the list gets smaller and the possibilities narrow.

This is a deduction puzzle built around a very large suspect list. There are no riddles and no grid to fill in. The work is 5,850 names, 28 clues and a process of elimination that ends at one name.

Who it’s for

Murder mystery fans who enjoy solving the case themselves. Fantasy readers who like a puzzle with trolls, elves, goblins and other unusual suspects. Anyone who likes logic puzzles and wants a case that takes more than a few minutes to close.

5,850 names are waiting. One of them is the killer. The troll maintains it was a setup.
