Description

Luigi Tansillo (1510-1568) wrote La Balia to persuade mothers to nurse their own children rather than send them to a wet-nurse — an argument that made the poem a minor classic of Enlightenment domestic reform. William Roscoe’s 1798 translation prints the Italian and the English on facing pages, and was read as much for its medical and social argument as for its verse; this copy comes from the library of the Royal College of Physicians of London. The parallel setting makes the volume useful to anyone studying translation practice between Italian and English in the period. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1798 Liverpool edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
