The Early Life of Miss Anne Lister and the Curious Tale of Miss Eliza Raine

£24.99

From the multitude of papers collected and filed by Anne Lister come the diaries of herself and her lover, an Indian heiress, and all their letters to each other, some in secret code. This is the first part of their story. As far as possible their own words have been used to tell their tale, and the letters and notes in secret code have been translated to give insight into their lesbian affair. This book shows their childhood in early nineteenth century Yorkshire in northern England during the start of the Industrial Revolution.

Description

Two young girls pledge undying love, marry each other secretly and promise to live together when they reach the age of twenty-one – but nothing works out as planned. This tale of Georgian England is from real diaries and letters, revealing actual lives of two women whose circumstances changed beyond belief. If you’re looking for the sedate world of Jane Austen you won’t find it here. This is the wild world of nineteenth century northern England made famous by the Bronte sisters who lived nearby, and who probably based their characters on these real people. Eliza Raine was probably the model for Mrs Rochester in Charlotte Bronte’s ‘Jane Eyre’, while Anne Lister was depicted as ‘Shirley’ by her sister Anne Bronte. Anne Lister was born in 1791 and started life as the daughter of a poor branch of a landed family. Her diaries fro 1806 to 1840 reveal her life as she develops as a lesbian, her travels through Europe and her many love affairs. In this book she uses secret code to detail her first love affair with Eliza Raine, the beautiful half-caste daughter of an English East India Company surgeon.
