Description
Bernardino Fernandez de Velasco, fourteenth Duke of Frias, belonged to the highest Castilian nobility and spent his life in public office — ambassador in London and Paris, briefly head of government. He also wrote poetry of real weight. The elegy on the death of his second wife, composed in Paris, is among the most admired Spanish poems of its century: grief handled with a restraint that the Romantic generation rarely managed. This posthumous collection, gathered by his friends, brings together the odes, elegies and occasional verse of a man who wrote, as one contemporary put it, because he could not help it. A voice from the moment when Spanish poetry turned from neoclassical decorum toward feeling.
