Description
A sentient starship asked for help. Its crew had already tidied away the body.
The ship is one of the Drift, and it carries passengers to Callisto because it likes the company. Its crew, the Marrow, live in its bones and clear away any debris they find. Two nights out, they cleared away a Grey. There wasn’t a mark on the body, and by the time the ship noticed, the cabin was spotless. The ship can feel every passenger aboard but can’t tell one from another, so it read the manifest and found an investigator on holiday. Somebody among its 2,560 passengers is a killer: humans, Greys, Nordics, Anunnaki, robots, plant people and more, every one with a ticket, a cabin and a fare paid in rock or ice.
The killer is somewhere in the manifest at the back of this book.
You have 24 clues to work through. Check each clue against the passengers on the manifest and eliminate anyone who doesn’t fit. Keep going until only one name remains.
2,560 names. 24 clues. One killer.
Inside the case file
- A printed passenger manifest of 2,560 names, each with a ticket, a cabin number, a species, a boarding point and a fare
- 24 clues covering names, tickets, species, fares and who was in the next cabin
- Full instructions and a worked example to show you exactly how the puzzle works
- A guide to the ten species aboard and a list of the fares the ship accepts
- One unique solution, checked against every entry
- The final answer is printed in code, so you won’t accidentally see the solution while working through the book
- Difficulty: 1 out of 3. The casual end of the scale
How the puzzle works
Each clue gives you another fact about the killer. If a passenger doesn’t match the clue, strike them from the manifest. As more clues are applied, the list gets smaller and the possibilities narrow.
This is a deduction puzzle built around a very large suspect list. There are no riddles to solve and no complicated grid to fill. Just 2,560 passengers, 24 clues and a process of elimination that leads to one answer.
