Amelia Matilda Murray (1795-1884), maid of honour to Queen Victoria and keen botanist, toured North America and Cuba in 1854-1855. Her letters mix society, landscape and natural history — and her frank observations on slavery caused such controversy that she had to resign her court post to publish them.
