The young merchant’s wife, Katerina Izmailova, languishes in boredom and loneliness in the wealthy house of her unloved husband. She begins a passionate affair with a clerk named Sergei, and this attachment quickly turns into a dark, all-consuming obsession.
To remove the obstacles in the path of her happiness and wealth, Katerina commits a series of brutal murders: first her father-in-law, then her husband, and finally her young nephew who was the rightful heir. The crimes are uncovered, and the heroine, along with her lover, is sent to hard labor in Siberia.
In the finale, faced with Sergei’s betrayal as he abandons her for another female convict, Katerina, in a fit of rage and despair, throws herself into the icy waters of the Volga, dragging her rival down with her.
