Abbie Farwell Brown (1871-1927) wrote for children in a Boston that took children’s books seriously, and she borrowed her manner from the saints’ legends: a forest, a boy who understands animals, a hermit, a wicked baron, and a moral that is never quite spelled out. It belongs to the same shelf as the Nordic and Christian legends she retold all her life.The illustrations are by E. Boyd Smith (1860-1943), among the best American picture-book artists of his generation and the man who taught a good many children what a farm, a ship or a forest looked like. Houghton Mifflin printed it at the Riverside Press, and the making shows.This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1910 Boston edition, reproduced in full from a library copy.
