Viollet-le-Duc, the restorer of Notre-Dame and of Carcassonne, wrote Histoire d’une maison to teach architecture by narrative: a young man undertakes to build a house, and the reader follows every decision — the site, the foundations, the framing, the roof, the cost — with the author’s own drawings at each step.It is the clearest statement of his rationalist doctrine, and was read by generations of architects, Frank Lloyd Wright among them.This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1873 Paris (Hetzel) edition, reproduced in full from a library copy.
