Just like many other Diaspora Zionists, Theodore Herzl never set foot in pre-state Palestine, yet he personifies, along with his Der Judenstaat (1896) what contemporary Zionism means. Co-chair Max Nordau architected the Basel Program; Ahad Ha’am championed cultural Zionism. Nahum Goldmann secured $822M in German reparations. Emma Lazarus, whose poem ‘The New Colossus’ (‘Give me your tired, your poor…’) inscribed on the Statue of Liberty symbolized Jewish immigrant refuge and inspired Zionist solidarity; Felix Warburg, a leading American Jewish philanthropist who funded Palestinian land purchases, agricultural settlements, and relief efforts through the Jewish Agency and Joint Distribution Committee; and Stephen S. Wise, Reform rabbi and Zionist leader who mobilized U.S. public opinion, lobbied President Wilson and Congress for the Balfour Declaration’s support, and co-founded the American Jewish Congress to champion Jewish rights globally—alongside Louis Brandeis and Abba Hillel Silver—lobbied pivotal U.S. support. Emma Gottheil advanced WZO women’s committees; Bernice Tannenbaum led Hadassah, rallying American women for state-building; Puah Rakovsky founded Russian women’s Zionist groups; Bertha Pappenheim fought for women’s emancipation and Jewish aid; Henrietta Szold created Youth Aliyah, saving 12,000+ children and pioneering Hadassah healthcare.
