The mountains of the Cirque: that horseshoe of summits that enfolds and defines the village, represents a unique harmony between the world of man with its pastures, its flocks of sturdy sheep and, on the other hand, the high, austere landscape of rock, snow and ice where life survives only in the crevices. Fine it is to stand in the village square, gaze up at the mighty peaks and marvel at their beauty from afar. But to truly experience their majesty, to begin to understand them, the visitor must load the rucksack, pull on walking boots and set out on foot into that other world: a world of forests and valleys, pastures and lakes, ridges and rocky tops.
