Description
Over the kitchen door of a rented cottage in Edenfield, a name is cut into the stone: JOAN FELL, 1643.
David Norton is twenty-four, a folklore student with a dissertation to write and no idea what he has walked into. He expects damp, poor signal and a good story to tell his supervisor. He does not expect a bottle of old pins hidden under the hearth, a fire that seems to talk, or a presence that will not stay in the house.
The story moves between David’s winter in the cottage and the year 1643, when a young woman called Joan Fell met a clerk who loved her, and cut her name into the stone. The records keep only a few lines of what happened to them. David has to find the rest, and then decide what to do about it.
The Name on the Lintel is a ghost story with a love story at its heart: short, dark and set in the hill villages of Lancashire. It is for readers who like their ghosts old-fashioned and don’t mind being moved as well as frightened.
