This is a story of our narrator Vlad Flea and his friend Loxton the rat. Their adventure is set in the squalor of Scutari Hospital where the injured soldiers are brought from the Crimean battlefields. It is a fictional adventure based on Florence Nightingale’s own letters and records, as well as the artefacts in the Florence Nightingale Museum. Vlad and the Florence Nightingale Adventure is a beautifully hand-illustrated story that shows what it was like to be nursed before it was shaken-up and professionalised by the formidable Miss Nightingale. It features the changes in the hospital and meets other key people like Mary Seacole, Alexis Soyer as well as Florence’s real pet tortoise, Jimmy.
