Description
Published to coincide with the exhibition ‘Urban Atlas Helsinki’ (University of Helsinki, 2023), this volume presents a series of paintings by Tom Cardwell of urban decoration in Helsinki. The works follow the ‘quodlibet’ genre of still life, recreating in detail areas of graffiti, posters and stickers that offer a cross section of contemporary life in Finland’s capital. Alongside the paintings, an essay by the artist provides context for the project, drawing on research from art history and social science. This is followed by a response from sociologist Olli Herranen.
