Description

The Austrian traveller and scientist Carl Scherzer (1821-1903) crossed Central America in 1853 and 1854. This first volume of the English edition (London, Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans & Roberts, 1857) is devoted mainly to Nicaragua: Granada, Leon, the great lakes and the interoceanic transit route, with its landscapes, peoples, trade and politics, and the hand-coloured folding map of Central America illustrating his travels. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1857 edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
