The Sump was never meant to last. A flooded highway trench outside Montréal, crawfish traps instead of fields, lanterns strung along bent guardrails. But people had started to believe in it, and Andy had started to believe alongside them.

Then the tremors came. Then the lights.

Andy leads a ragged column north toward Francon, a walled settlement built on stone instead of mud, where rations are measured and losses are filed and the administration makes sense of everything it takes from you. It looks like order. It is order, which turns out to be a different problem.

Because Francon has a cost. And the army moving through the lowlands is not the worst thing following them.

Andy will have to decide what he owes the people he’s kept alive, what he’s willing to trade to keep them that way, and what it means to make a choice you cannot explain to the person standing next to you.
