Description
In the year 1960, based on the tropical island of Gan in the Maldives, the RAF was not just a military presence; it was a vibrant community of characters, stories, and unforgettable moments. Join me as I take you on a journey through the pages of my illustrated diary, a somewhat chaotic collection of letters home, and my photographs, which together capture the essence of life on this remote atoll.
Armed with a computer and a fair bit of nostalgia, I’ve digitized my transparencies, enhancing them to give you a glimpse of what it was like to live in a time when a good cup of tea was as essential as the aircraft flying overhead.
Now, I must say that recalling events from nearly four decades ago isn’t exactly a walk in the park — more like a ride in a vintage Land Rover — so expect a few bumps along the way as I recount my adventures, mishaps and friendships during my time on Gan. Please forgive me if I’ve remembered it wrong!
Fast forward to 1998, when my wife and I decided to revisit my old stomping ground, now transformed into a vacation destination, which beckoned me to experience the magic of Gan once again and to see what, if anything, remained of the RAF base where I served all those years ago.
So buckle up and dive into a narrative filled with nostalgia, humour and a dash of adventure as we explore a tropical atoll in the Indian Ocean where past and present collide.
