Description

This book tells the story of RAF Seletar, initially known as RAF Singapore, which was in its day the crowning glory of the RAF presence in the Far East and many RAF servicemen and their families have fond memories of the time they spent there.

The need of an RAF presence in Singapore was first mooted back in 1921, only three years after the birth of the Royal Air Force, but it was 1928 before the base officially opened for business. That still leaves it with a history as long and colourful as any in the Royal Air Force.

Seletar was the only airfield on the island during the golden age of flying in the interwar years, when it played host to famous aviators like Kingsford-Smith and Amy Johnson, but also to record breakers, film stars, princes and kings and later, in the dark days of the Second World War, the Japanese Navy. This story is in many ways also the history of Singapore itself, which developed beyond all recognition during the years that the air base was in operation.

Our tale begins way back in the 1800s and takes us all the way to the closure of the RAF base in July 1971. For anyone who served in the military in the Far East – and at Seletar in particular, in whatever capacity, this book will evoke all manner of memories, but rest assured that it is not a dull history of dry facts and figures, it is an adventure story told in words and pictures.
