200 chess puzzles taken from real games, for players who know how the pieces move and are ready to start finding tactical ideas for themselves.
The puzzles are mixed rather than grouped by type, so you are never told what to look for. Just look at the position and work out what matters.
Each puzzle has its own page, with ruled space underneath to write out your move and your opponent’s reply in pencil. Writing out the whole line makes you look beyond your own move and think about how your opponent can reply.
Answers come after every nine puzzles, rather than hidden at the back. Try to solve all nine puzzles before checking the answers, then go back and see how you did. The difficulty is shown with the answer, not the puzzle, so you have no idea in advance whether the next position will be easy or difficult — just as you don’t over the board. Every solution has been checked with Stockfish, a powerful chess engine.
Once you have checked your answer, you’ll also see the tactical ideas involved, shown as labelled tags. The terminology is explained in the glossary, helping you build up a wider range of tactical patterns and recognise them more easily in your own games.
Small enough to take with you, and easy to pick up for ten minutes at a time.
