Description

Read the position. Find the tactic.

500 chess puzzles taken from real games, for club players who want tactics practice that feels like a real game.

Real games don’t tell you what tactic to look for, so neither does this book. The puzzles are deliberately mixed throughout, and you are never given the theme or difficulty in advance. You have to assess the position, find the opportunity and work out the line for yourself. Some are quick to spot; others take more calculation.

There are four clear diagrams on each page, each with space underneath to write out your line in pencil — your moves and your opponent’s best replies. Writing down the whole line makes you commit to a concrete answer rather than spotting an idea and moving on.

Answers come after every 20 puzzles, just a few pages away rather than hidden at the back. Each answer tells you which tactical motif you found, shown as labelled tags explained in the glossary, and how difficult the puzzle was — something you are never told over the board. Every solution has been checked with Stockfish, a powerful chess engine.

  • 500 puzzles covering the major tactical ideas of chess
  • Four clear diagrams per page, with space to write your line
  • A deliberately mixed range of positions and difficulties
  • Tactical motif and difficulty revealed only in the answer
  • Answers every 20 puzzles, just a few pages away
  • Every solution checked with Stockfish

However you use the book, write down your line before you look.
