Description
Written in answer to a questionnaire from the French diplomat Barbé-Marbois, the Notes on the State of Virginia are Jefferson’s only full-length book: a survey of the state’s geography, rivers, natural history, population, laws, religion and manners, with his famous pages on slavery, religious freedom and the American natural world. This is the Richmond edition published by J. W. Randolph in 1853, ‘prepared by the author’, with its plans, folding table and map. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1853 edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
