A dark Gothic novel set in 1780s England. An anti-heroine pursues her twisted ambition and dangerous desires, to a backdrop of vampires, poisoned cups and ruined towers.
Mariella Vangard is beautiful, ruthless, and longs to be independent. After her parents’ stagecoach is attacked by a sinister highwayman, Mariella and her three sisters are forced to live with distant relatives. Yet their new abode appears haunted, with mysterious night-time visitations and unexplained deaths.
Occult expert Edward Vinehart is called in to deal with the darkness that stalks the grounds. But when he and his brother are revealed to be heirs to a vast fortune, the Vineharts fall prey to Mariella’s dark designs.
With the help of her disreputable and poisonous friend Mrs Roe, Mariella embarks on a crusade to secure the fortune for herself, determined to destroy anyone who gets in her way.
What readers are saying about Mariella:
‘What a read! I’ve always enjoyed vampire stories, both traditional and more contemporary, and this one delivered on all counts. Mariella is a sophisticated, gothic tale about the terrible consequences of unadulterated ambition that will take you right back to the origins of the genre while subverting your expectations at every turn. All in all, a masterful debut from Jonathan Kind. I can’t wait to read the next one!’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Zoe Perrenoud, author of Bloodlender
‘I recommend Mariella to readers who enjoy Gothic fiction with strong historical texture, morally complicated women, family drama, and vampire horror that is more seductive and tragic than purely gruesome. It’s not a cozy read, and it doesn’t offer an easy heroine to cheer for. But for readers who like their Gothic novels stormy, strange, and emotionally tangled, this one has a strong pull.’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Literary Titan
‘Really enjoyed this, it was so well written and the descriptions so vivid. I couldn’t put it down.’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Amazon reviewer
‘The story is very intense and I love the twists of it. Every page keeps you gripped and you want to find out more! Highly recommended if you are into gothic novels.’⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Amazon reviewer
‘Imagine if Bram Stoker, Sheridan Le Fanu, Jane Austen, and Georgette Heyer had a lovechild, and that offspring wrote a Gothic novel… That novel would be Mariella. Read it and shiver.’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Goodreads reviewer
‘Such a great story! It has everything and uses it well. Mariella is quite the character and I love that she’s so smart and not just one of the sweet belle type, I really like her… mostly, she’s definitely a character lol. Highly recommend this book!’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Goodreads reviewer
‘I loved the Georgian setting of this book, with a gothic twist and not to mention vampires! I especially enjoyed reading the second part, which gets very dark as Mariella’s scheming reaches new heights – I couldn’t put it down.’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Goodreads reviewer
