The play opens in 1652 when Lady Anne has finally inherited her estates. After the Prologue, showing the young Lady Anne in her final Masque performance before her marriage, the story tells of the years between 1603 and 1617 – her early life, her first marriage, to Richard Sackville, and the turbulent events which led to her extraordinary confrontation with, and defiance of, King James 1st.
