Description
Joseph, on a libretto by Alexandre Duval after the Book of Genesis, was first given at the Opéra-Comique in February 1807 and became Méhul’s best-loved work, admired by Weber, Berlioz and Wagner for its noble simplicity and its writing for the voice. This is the engraved full score issued in Paris by the composers’ own publishing house — overture, numbers and spoken dialogue — reproduced from a copy in the archives of La Monnaie in Brussels. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1807 edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
