After National Service in the RAF, Selby Martin went to Cambridge University where he became interested in Scandinavia, in particular Finland. He joined the Foreign Office where his postings included Moscow and La Paz. He was later appointed to Shrewsbury School where he taught for twenty-four years, as well as campaigning on environmental issues.
