Francisco Pacheco (1564-1644) is remembered for two things he did not intend: he took a boy named Diego Velazquez into his Seville workshop, and he wrote the Arte de la Pintura, the most complete account we have of how a Spanish painter of the Golden Age understood his craft — its theology, its rules of decorum, its pigments. As a painter he was careful rather than inspired; as a witness he is irreplaceable. Jose Maria Asensio, a Seville scholar of Cervantes and of local art, assembles here the artistic and literary work together, including the portrait drawings of famous men that are Pacheco’s most alive achievement.
