From boyhood Jim was always fascinated with “messing about in boats”. After building his first canoe during World War 2 as a nine-year-old he went on as a cadet in the Merchant Navy to become a Master Mariner. In 1969 he completed the construction of a small catamaran which he subsequently sailed single-handed across the Atlantic Ocean.
