Description
Antonin Proust met Manet at the Collège Rollin and remained his closest friend until the painter’s death; as Gambetta’s Minister of Fine Arts he gave Manet the Legion of Honour. His souvenirs follow Manet from Couture’s studio through the Salon battles over Olympia and the Déjeuner sur l’herbe to the 1884 retrospective, and reprint Zola’s preface to the catalogue. This is the Laurens edition of 1913, illustrated with a frontispiece by Fantin-Latour and thirty-eight plates after Manet. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1913 edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
