Eleven-year-old Willie Johnston struggled to survive one of the most brutal weeks of the American Civil War.
The Seven Days Battle carried through June’s hot, rainy end in 1862. When the Union’s Army of the Potomac followed General McClellan’s evacuation order, most men threw away anything that might slow down their retreat. Packs of rations, bedding, extra clothing, and equipment were abandoned as the men crossed from Malvern Hill to Harrison’s Landing on July 1, 1862.
Willie and the other drummer boys, tired, afraid, hungry, wet, and cold, struggled to keep up with the grown men as well as carry their heavy wooden drums. Could Willie survive this nightmare he was trapped in?
But the following day, one drummer played reveille on the one drum that crossed the creek. Two years later, the United States Army awarded that man the Medal of Honor for his bravery and for maintaining the morale of the Army of the Potomac on one of its dark days.
