Description

Coffee Table Book of: Lakes is a large format book of lakes, printed edge to edge in colour, one picture to a page and the widest carried across two: glassy dawns and rising mist, rocky islets and granite shores, mountain lakes below peaks and glaciers, autumn reflections, storms and starry nights, and frozen lakes from the first black ice to the breaking up of the ice in spring.

Still water mirrors a dark spruce shore at dawn, a lone boulder at sunset, an island of scarlet maples in autumn and a pine point under the stars and the northern lights, while mist rises gold off a cold morning lake, steam curls round an islet in the first low sun, a summer storm rolls in under black clouds, waves break white on a rocky shore and a full moon lays its path across the water.

In the mountains lie a deep blue lake in a bowl of cliffs and snow, a round turquoise lake below a lone peak, a milky lake beneath a glacier, a clear lake with its stones showing far from shore and a small lake ringed by golden larches.

Winter brings fresh snow on a frozen lake at blue dusk, clear black ice with its bubbles, cracks and frost flowers, slabs of ice shoved up on a rocky shore and a skater far off on the ice, and in spring the ice breaks into drifting plates and heaps of chiming candles along a pebble shore.

Loons float in the mist, carry a chick on the back and nest at the water’s edge, a heron waits in the shallows, a moose wades at dawn and an otter rests on a rock, with a kingfisher, a dragonfly, a painted turtle, a pair of swans, a beaver dam and a beaver lodge.

Short notes run through the book, on how lakes are made and how they change through the year, the birds and animals that live on and around them, and the canoes, docks and cabins of lake country: great boulders on lake shores were carried there by glaciers and dropped as the ice melted, fine rock dust ground by glaciers hangs in the water and turns many mountain lakes a milky turquoise, loon chicks often ride on a parent’s back in their first weeks, safe from the cold and from fish below, and moose wade into lakes in summer to feed on water plants and to escape the biting flies.

Printed in full colour on heavy 150gsm coated paper at 216 x 279 mm (8.5 x 11 inches), as a hardcover with the art printed on the case.
