Otto von Bismarck (1815-1898) was a Prussian statesman who unified Germany and served as its first Chancellor from 1871 to 1890. Known as the ‘Iron Chancellor,’ he skillfully used diplomacy and war to achieve his goals, most notably through the Austro-Prussian War and Franco-Prussian War. Bismarck’s Realpolitik and social reforms, including the establishment of a welfare state, significantly shaped modern Europe. His legacy includes the strong, unified German Empire and the complex alliances that led to World War I.
