Description

The tales within this book come from the voices of those who served in various capacities within the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) during the tumultuous years of World War II. These remarkable women, many just in their teens or early twenties, answered the call to serve in non-combatant roles within the Armed Forces.

Stepping away from home  – often for the first time – they ventured boldly into environments traditionally dominated by men, taking on responsibilities previously thought beyond the reach of women. The women of the WAAF operated barrage balloons, teleprinters, and radar sets. They turned wrenches as mechanics on both vehicles and aircraft, managed offices and administrative tasks, tended to the wounded in hospitals, and drove ambulances, trucks, and staff cars. They also worked as cooks and batwomen, among a plethora of other roles, often amid dangerous and makeshift settings.

In their moments of respite, these spirited young women embraced life with a fervour that only wartime could kindle. They danced and lived with an exuberance unmatched, forming friendships that stood the test of time and experiencing romances, all while grappling with the heartache of losing friends and sweethearts and the grim realities of war. Yet, it was their youthful spirit, unwavering faith, and camaraderie that saw them through the darkest of days.

This book offers first-hand accounts of these experiences and much more, providing a poignant insight into the lives and loves of these indomitable young women who each made their own invaluable contributions to the war effort all those years ago.
