Gustav Ludwig was a physician before he was an art historian, and he spent his last years in the Venetian archives looking for what paintings do not say: who commissioned, who paid, how much, on what deadline, with which pigments. The documents he brought out — wills, inventories, notarial acts, confraternity accounts — rewrote the chronologies of Giovanni Bellini, Carpaccio and Lotto. This posthumous volume, edited by Wilhelm Bode from his papers, gathers those findings. It is pure scholarship, and one of the foundations of everything written since on Venetian painting.
