Description

Nestling on the southern slopes of the South Downs, overlooking the coastal plain and the English Channel, is the little Sussex village of Slindon, one of the prettiest of all the Downland villages.

Slindon attracts many visitors each year, who are instantly charmed by its picturesque qualities: narrow country lanes, flint walls, village pond, two churches (one Anglican and one Catholic), many fine houses and the loveliness of the surrounding countryside.

What the casual observer cannot appreciate is that this attractive village has a history as long and colourful as any rural settlement in England, dating back to Saxon times and beyond.

In this entertaining and informative book, Josephine Duggan Rees, a resident of the village since 1952, reveals that history, recounting lively stories of Slindon over the centuries – its interesting connections with famous people and events, its many historic buildings and the activities of some of its more colourful villagers – and in doing so, she records for posterity the surprising richness and variety of life in this rural Sussex community.

In this revised and updated (2026) edition, many of the historic photos have been enhanced and colourised using the latest technology and numerous factual and typographical errors present in previous editions have been corrected. Many annotations and a comprehensive index have been added.
