A Gefilte Fish Out of Water

A cookbook blurring the differences between New York and London in Jewish cooking. Combining the rich traditions and colourful food of my upbringing in NYC with the weird and wonderful traditions in England from the Jewish Kitchen in Whitechapel to the oddly butchered beasts of Hampshire.

Description

I’ve been moving back and forth between London and New York City since 1981. I’m a New Yorker born and bred but my soul is happiest in London. In 1999, with 3 little kids we moved back to the UK for good. But we didn’t move to London. After a few years of hideousness in the remote country-sides of Lancashire and West Sussex, the kids and I ended up in a beautiful, commutable village in Hampshire. So remote that we were the only Jews. At least the only evident Jews. It was up to me to make the holidays and prepare the feasts. I found an old, out of print Jewish cookbook in the library and tried to love it, but between us, everything was beige and bland. Nothing like the rich traditions and colourful food of my upbringing. Nothing like the bustling Jewish Kitchen in Whitechapel near my first law firm at the end of Brick Lane. It became clear that I was going to have to nag friends and family for recipes, rituals and reassurance.
