Description

Padfield is a village in the northwest of Derbyshire on the edge of the Dark Peak Pennine hills. As part of the year 2000 Millenium celebrations the villagers made a display of photographs of their village, spanning the whole of the 20th century. The photographic exhibition was the inspiration for this book, which delves into the stories behind the photos and goes beyond the national occasions, the world events and the lives of the rich and famous. It captures the essence of the village, recording for the future what ordinary Padfielders got up to in the years during which photography has been available to us. It describes the lives of ordinary folk, their toils, their leisure, their childhoods, their social groups and every aspect of their village community. It is not just Padfield that is mirrored here but typical village life throughout the north-west of England.
