Description
The first edition of John Murray’s Hand-book for Travellers in Northern Italy (London, 1843; preface dated August 1842), written anonymously by Sir Francis Palgrave (1788-1861): routes, towns, churches, palaces and galleries of Piedmont, Lombardy, Venice, Parma, Modena, Lucca and Tuscany, with the celebrated preliminary observations on Italian art and history. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile reproduced from a library copy, which lacks the travelling map and the first page of the table of contents. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
