Description
No House. No god. No mercy from the salt.
‘I am dying, and the salt knows it.’
Nine days out of the Underdeep, half-blinded by a sun she was never meant to see, Zhara is a drow priestess with no House, no water, and no way home. Her House was erased because she would not finish a sacrifice. Now her sister, the Blade-sister Ilvaine, is crossing the scorched Breaks to collect the debt.
Asterion, an escaped arena minotaur bound by a silent vow he calls the Thread, will not let Zhara die on the salt. But the surface has its own predators, and by the time the blood moon rises, she is carrying a child she never chose.
Their last refuge is the Sorry Sons: a profane, battle-scarred rake of half-orc riders on giant hornback goats, holding a ruined monastery above Widow’s Throat. They don’t want a drow. They especially don’t want one who gives orders.
But the hunters are massing in the canyons, and the riders have a code: hold the Throat, pay the dead, never ride alone.
To survive, Zhara will have to learn to ask instead of command.
