In 1910 the Northern Union sent a party of English, Welsh and a solitary Scot to play a series of tour matches against Australia and New Zealand, beginning a tradition of tours that has been interrupted only by two world wars. For a sport that is still centred, at professional level, on Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cumbria, it was the beginning of a remarkable series of tours, and fiercely competitive games.
