Description

A record of the men of the Kent Cricket Club elevens who served during the Great War, this book reveals previously unpublished records of bravery and valour that are a timely reminder of the conflict. The cricketers were amongst the first to volunteer to serve their country and, of almost a hundred that are reviewed, two were taken prisoner, sixteen died in service and twenty more were wounded, some unable to play to the same standard again. Follow their progress from enlistment to service in France and Flanders, Gallipoli, Egypt, Palestine, Mesopotamia, Salonika and the Caucasus, in the trenches, at sea and in the air. Of this small group of men thirteen were awarded the Military Cross, three the DSO and there were 32 Mentions in Despatches. Several personal accounts bring the experiences of the men to life and collectively their stories cover the war from start to finish.
