A year after the golden spike, the English journalist William Fraser Rae (1835-1905) rode the new transcontinental line from the Atlantic to San Francisco and reported what he saw : emigrant cars and Pullman palaces, Chicago, Omaha, the Mormon capital, the Sierra. His book became the classic early account of the Pacific Railroad as the new route to the East. The folding route map, tinted in colour, is reproduced in colour in this facsimile of the New York edition (D. Appleton, 1871).This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1871 New York (D.
