Charles Eliot Norton was the first professor of art history at Harvard, and for thirty years he was the man Ruskin wrote to when he wanted to be understood rather than admired. The letters run from architecture and Turner to money, madness and the deaths of friends, and they get harder as they go: this second volume covers the years when Ruskin’s mind was failing him in bouts he could feel coming.Norton edited them himself, after Ruskin’s death, and the editing is part of the document — he prints what he thinks a friend may print, and says where he has stopped. What survives is the least performed of Ruskin’s writing, by a man whose public prose was nothing if not performed.This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1904 Boston edition, reproduced in full from a library copy.
