Description

Thomas Powell, M.D., did not accept that microbes cause disease, and he wrote this to say so at length: pathogens, in his account, are consequences of a body already deranged rather than the cause of its derangement. He published it himself, through the Powell Publishing Company of Los Angeles and London, in three parts and some six hundred pages. Bacteriology had effectively won the argument by 1909, which is precisely what makes the book interesting — it is a full, serious, articulate statement of the losing side, written when the loss was recent enough that its author could still believe it reversible. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1909 Los Angeles edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
