Description
Wenceslao Emilio Retana (1862-1924) was the most industrious Spanish bibliographer of the Philippines, and this small volume gathers what he could document of the anito beliefs of the islands: the spirits of the dead, the charms and the observances that survived three centuries of Spanish rule.It is a colonial-era source, and reads as one — but it preserves ethnographic detail recorded nowhere else, and remains cited in the study of Philippine folk religion. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1894 Madrid edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
