Description

At 2:14 on a Tuesday morning, the sun reaches down and switches off the world.

Dr. Nate Barrett is working the night shift alone in a small Florida Panhandle emergency department when the lights die and do not come back. No phones. No lab. No ambulances. Nothing with an engine will start, and no help is coming. For four days he keeps his patients alive with what is left: a failing generator, a bucket line up the stairwells, a ventilator older than the man running it, and his own two hands. Then the generator quits.

Sixty-four miles west, his eleven-year-old son is waiting in Baldwin County, Alabama. Nate’s grown children are scattered across a dark South, each fighting a way through the collapse. Between Nate and home lie dead highways, guarded rivers, and people who have learned exactly what a bottle of water is worth.

Written by an emergency physician who has worked these same nights, The Distance Home is a visceral, medically authentic story of duty, endurance, and the lengths a family will go to reach each other, and of what it costs when not everyone makes it home.
